The Charlotte Hornets have a unique history in the NBA, with two distinct eras of professional basketball in Charlotte. The city's original NBA team began play in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets. That team remained in Charlotte until 2002, when the franchise relocated to New Orleans.

Charlotte returned to the NBA with a new expansion franchise in 2004, originally known as the Charlotte Bobcats. The team played as the Bobcats from 2004 through 2014 before officially bringing back the Charlotte Hornets name for the 2014-15 season.

When the Hornets name returned to Charlotte in 2014, the organization also regained the statistical information, records and history of the original Charlotte Hornets from 1988-2002. The New Orleans franchise retained the history beginning with its first season in New Orleans in 2002-03.

Retired Numbers

The Charlotte Hornets have officially retired the jersey numbers of two players who made lasting contributions to the franchise in Charlotte:

• #13 – Bobby Phills
• #30 – Dell Curry

Bobby Phills became the first Charlotte Hornets player to have his number retired when the team retired his No. 13 in February 2000. Dell Curry, one of the original members of the 1988-89 Charlotte Hornets, had his No. 30 retired on March 19, 2026.

Honored Number

The NBA's current Charlotte Hornets franchise page also lists #7 – Pete Maravich among its retired numbers. Maravich did not play for the Charlotte Hornets; his No. 7 was retired by the New Orleans Hornets in 2002 as an honor to the basketball legend and his connection to Louisiana basketball. His inclusion on the current Hornets franchise listing reflects the franchise's historical relationship with the New Orleans era.
