Pete Maravich is a unique part of New Orleans basketball history. He never played for the New Orleans Hornets or the New Orleans Pelicans. Instead, he starred for the New Orleans Jazz from 1974 to 1979. The Pelicans nevertheless honor Maravich and his No. 7 as a legendary figure in New Orleans basketball, and the NBA's current Pelicans franchise page officially lists No. 7 among its retired numbers.

The NBA's current Pelicans franchise records also recognize Spencer Haywood as a Hall of Famer associated with New Orleans basketball, with his New Orleans season listed as 1979. Haywood played for the New Orleans Jazz before the franchise later relocated to Utah.
