Charlie Ward was born on October 12, 1970, in Thomasville, Georgia. He grew up in a large family and was the sixth of seven children. Ward was a standout athlete in both basketball and football in high school, and he was heavily recruited by colleges in both sports. He ultimately chose to attend Florida State University, where he played both football and basketball. In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy in 1993, Ward was also a consensus All-American and led the Seminoles to a national championship in football. After college, Ward was drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft. He played for the Knicks for 10 seasons, and he was known for his solid defense, reliable shooting, and exceptional leadership skills. After retiring from the NBA, Ward became a high school basketball coach and also worked as a studio analyst for college football broadcasts.
