Mateen Cleaves was born on September 7, 1977, in Flint, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he played college basketball for the Spartans. Cleaves was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the 2000 NBA draft. He played for the Pistons for two seasons before playing for the Sacramento Kings and the Cleveland Cavaliers during his NBA career. After retiring from basketball, Cleaves became a basketball analyst and commentator for Fox Sports Detroit. He is also involved in various philanthropic activities, including founding the Mateen Cleaves Foundation to help disadvantaged youth in Michigan.
