Bob Thornton was born on September 1, 1953, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up playing basketball and attended the University of California, Irvine, where he played college basketball for four seasons. Thornton was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the third round of the 1975 NBA Draft. He played for several teams throughout his NBA career, including the Utah Jazz, the Golden State Warriors, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thornton was known for his rebounding and defensive skills, and he was a valuable role player on several playoff teams. He retired from the NBA in 1981.
