McKinney played college basketball at Northwestern University and was selected by the Kansas City Kings in the first round of the 1978 NBA draft. During his NBA career, McKinney played for several teams, including the Jazz, the Denver Nuggets, and the Indiana Pacers. He was known for his shooting and playmaking abilities and was a one-time NBA All-Star.
