Barnes played college basketball at Providence and was known for his scoring and rebounding abilities. He was drafted in the first round, second overall, by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1974 NBA draft. He played for six NBA teams throughout his career, including the Detroit Pistons, Buffalo Braves, and Boston Celtics. He also played for a variety of teams in different leagues around the world. Barnes battled drug addiction throughout his career and faced legal troubles as a result. He passed away on September 8, 2014, at the age of 62.
