He was born on September 26, 1955, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and attended the University of Arkansas, where he played college basketball. Brewer was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1978 NBA draft, where he spent the first two years of his NBA career. He played for several other teams during his eight-year NBA career, including the San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New Jersey Nets.
