The team played as the Dallas Chaparrals from 1967 to 1970, became the Texas Chaparrals for the 1970-71 season, returned to the name Dallas Chaparrals for the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons, and then moved to San Antonio and became the San Antonio Spurs in 1973.
The Spurs played in the ABA through the 1975-76 season before joining the NBA for the 1976-77 season. The franchise has remained in San Antonio ever since, building one of the greatest long-term traditions in professional basketball.
