The franchise began as the Buffalo Bisons, became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, then the Milwaukee Hawks, and later the St. Louis Hawks. In 1968, the franchise moved to Atlanta and became the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks have won 1 NBA Championship in franchise history. That championship came in 1958, when the team was known as the St. Louis Hawks. Led by legendary forward Bob Pettit, St. Louis defeated the Boston Celtics in the 1958 NBA Finals to win the only championship in franchise history.
