Steve Alford, wearing #2 for the Dallas Mavericks, is a former NBA player who was born on November 23, 1964, in Franklin, Indiana. He played college basketball at Indiana University before being selected by the Mavericks in the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft. Alford played for the Mavericks for two seasons before being traded to the Golden State Warriors in 1989. He also played briefly for the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons before retiring in 1991. After his playing career, Alford became a successful college basketball coach, with coaching stints at several universities, including the University of Iowa and the University of New Mexico.
