He was born on September 26, 1955, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and attended the University of Arkansas, where he played college basketball. Brewer was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1978 NBA draft, where he spent the first two years of his NBA career. He played for several other teams during his eight-year NBA career, including the San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New Jersey Nets. Brewer was known for his scoring ability, as he averaged 14.0 points per game during his NBA career, and for his perimeter defense, which earned him a place on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1980.
