The Miami Heat have been part of the NBA since 1988, when the league expanded to South Florida. Unlike many historic NBA franchises, the Heat have used the name Miami Heat throughout their entire history.

The Heat have won 3 NBA Championships, capturing the NBA title in 2006, 2012, and 2013. Miami's first championship came in 2006, when Dwyane Wade led the Heat past the Dallas Mavericks and earned NBA Finals MVP honors.

The franchise returned to the NBA Finals in 2011 before beginning one of the most celebrated eras in modern NBA history. Led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat won consecutive championships in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, Miami defeated the San Antonio Spurs in a dramatic seven-game Finals series and became back-to-back NBA champions.

Retired Numbers

The Miami Heat have officially retired six numbers in recognition of legendary players and an honored basketball figure:

• #3 – Dwyane Wade
• #10 – Tim Hardaway
• #32 – Shaquille O'Neal
• #33 – Alonzo Mourning
• #23 – Michael Jordan (Honored by the Heat; never played for Miami)

Dwyane Wade is the defining player of the Heat's championship history, leading Miami to its first NBA title in 2006 and becoming a three-time NBA champion with the franchise. Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway helped establish Miami as a major Eastern Conference contender during the 1990s, while Shaquille O'Neal joined Wade to form the core of the 2006 championship team.

The Heat's second championship era was built around LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Bosh's No. 1 and Wade's No. 3 are now permanently retired by Miami in recognition of their contributions to the franchise.

Honored Number – Michael Jordan

The Heat have also retired #23 in honor of Michael Jordan. Jordan never played for Miami, and his No. 23 is not a representation of a former Heat player. Miami retired the number as a tribute to Jordan and his impact on basketball.
